When it was announced yesterday that Blake Griffin was going to miss the remainder of this season after deciding to undergo knee surgery, how is it possible for anyone not to feel bad for this team? You can only laugh at a team so much before you start wondering if they are truly cursed. Griffin was touted as the most athletic player at his position since Lebron James in 2003, hurt his knee while throwing down one of his signature power dunks. It’s understood that the Clippers will never be the Lakers, this much is obvious, but that doesn’t mean that someday that won’t turn this ship around. From top to bottom the Clippers roster feature a team that is pretty athletic. This will happen when, if discounting the 2006 season in which they did not have a 1st round pick, they have picked in the lottery every season since 1993. That right there should make you feel bad for this team, that they have swung and missed on so many players and keep setting their franchise farther back each season.
Blake Griffin just seems to me as the kind of player who can rebound from this injury. Knee surgery did not stop Amare Stoudemire from being the explosive power forward that he today, but part of Amare’s game is that he play away from the rim, there are still many questions about Griffin regarding that issue. The fact that his college career was predicated on being more athletic then the player he faced was the reason he was taken number one overall, however, in the NBA, everyone is athletic.(except for the white centers)
People don’t care about the Clippers, or even the NBA for that matter, but when reading the Blake Griffin story yesterday, I couldn’t help but give them some publicity, because God knows they don’t get any in their own town.
